Badminton as we know it today is a racquet game played with 2 to 4 players with a net in between. This game was played a bit differently from how it is today: equipments like nets and net posts were not originally part of the game and it was believed to have originally played in Greece some two thousand years ago.
In medieval England, there was a popular children’s game called Battledore and Shuttlecock. This game reached India in 1860s brought there by the agents of the British Raj. They attempted to make the sport more competitive thus they added the net and net posts.
The first badminton club named the Bath Badminton Club issued a set of rules for the sport in 1877 but not until 1893 that an official set of rules were published by the Badminton Association of England. In modern times, it is the International Badminton Federation (IBF) which governs the rules and regulations of badminton and promotes the sport globally.
The badminton court is rectangular in shape and measures 44′ long X 17′ wide (singles match) and 44′ long X 20′ wide (double’s match). The court’s flooring surface is usually composite or made of wood to make it smooth and leveled. The minimum required clear space on all sides is 6.5′.
The badminton net divides the court in two and must be 5′ 1″ on the edges and 5′ in the center. The poles that support the net must be planted outside the double’s line and should be so even when a single’s match is ongoing.
Badminton nets are made from a range of materials: from vinyl to nylon to polyethylene. When getting one of these nets, be sure to check for strength and durability. Make sure that the net is made of fine natural cord or artificial fiber, has an even thickness (15 mm to 20 mm) and has a dark color.
When setting up a badminton net, the first consideration you should make is the height of the net. Make sure that the badminton net is correctly extended between the poles. The net’s depth must be 2′ 6″ and edge it with 75 mm white tape supported by a cable or cord stretched over the posts.
In professional badminton, the measurements and dimensions (i.e. the badminton net’s height) must be precise however in private games, (i.e. when playing with your kids), the height of the badminton net can be variable according to your requirement as well as discretion as a player.
